IWC Trophy for best wine in the Wairarapa!

The IWC Trophy’s for 2018 have been announced and our Holly Pinot Noir 2016 has been awarded the trophy for best wine in our region, Wairarapa! Winemaker Miles Dinneen says “We are so pleased with the result and knew that this was a special wine from a great vintage. It’s great to see that recognized.”

“Bold and bright, juicy, dark fruit. Blueberry, plum and blackberry. Well-structured and balanced.”

And trying to out do the Holly award is our rockstar winemaker Miles, who has taken out the trophy for best Syrah in the world! How good is that? Beating all the Australian Shriz. This was from his former life as winemaker for Crossroads. Lucky we are adding Syrah to the portfolio this year!

Great to have this lovely bunch over from the USA. A very knowledgeable group of Sommeliers who we were lucky enough to have for a gorgeous wine matched lunch as part of their tour of NZ Wine country. Thanks for coming team!

Matahiwi shine at the Fifty Best NZ tastings

We are really happy with the results from the Fifty Best NZ tastings. Our Holly Pinot Noir 2013 received a well deserved Double Gold while the Matahiwi Estate Pinot Noir 2013 and Mt Hector Sauvignon Blanc 2015 both picked up Golds. A great result.

The 2016 vintage is a stunner!

Wow, vintage has come and gone already. In a challenging year for New Zealand vineyards, the Wairarapa has had a stunner!  This is thanks to hot settled weather right up to and through vintage with minimal rain. The Wairarapa is smoking hot right now!

The Pinot Noirs loved this and have produced small berries with consistent bunches and clean ripe flavours. Both the Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris crops have also delivered a fantastic consistent result.

This year we harvested the new plantings of Chardonnay from the home block for the first time. Head winemaker, Jane Cooper, is super happy with how these are looking. The Hawkes Bay Chardonnay fruit is the best we have picked so far and we are excited to see how these develop.

With all the grapes now in, the hard work begins. We look forward to releasing the 2016 vintage already!

Golds from CWSA Best Value

We are proud to announce that we have picked up gold awards from CWSA, the most biggest wine and spirit awards in China. We have won Double Gold for its Matahiwi Pinot Gris 2015 and Mt. Hector Sauvignon Blanc 2015, and also a Gold for Matahiwi Sauvignon Blanc 2015.

As a family owned company with a small dedicated team our goal is to enhance the pure natural flavours from the fruit and the vineyard.  To see results like these shows the hard work is paying off!

2016 vintage update from winemaker Jane Cooper

The vineyard is looking great!  It’s been a cracker season so far with a moderate spring (a few frosts which we fought off well!), not too much rain and then into quite a warm period now in December.

The Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris have just finished flowering and luckily we had a warm spell when this happened, so the new tiny bunches are looking very healthy and even.  Flowering now in the Sauvignon Blanc and we had 28 degrees yesterday!

Crossing our fingers for the second half so we can bring in a delicious vintage.  Merry Christmas to all!

Our Estate Sauvingnon Blanc picks up Gold and a Top 50 spot!

We are very happy to announce that we have been named in the New World Wine Awards Top 50 wines!

Our Matahiwi Estate 2014 Sauvignon Blanc was the only one outside of the Marlborough/Nelson region. Great recognition we are happy to bask in! As New World said “Very pretty floral and pineapple aromas, the taste is ripe, textural and juicy. A food friendly wine from just north of Wellington and a brilliant accompaniment to watching a rerun of James Bond movies!”

How do you pronounce Matahiwi?

We are often asked how to pronounce Matahiwi. The correct pronunciation is Ma-ta-hi-wi. Click on the link below to hear it!

The meaning of Matahiwi is raised ridge. Mata meaning raised/headland and hiwi meaning ridge. When you come to the winery you will see the raise up on to Paierua Road where the vineyard and winery are located.
