ME by Matahiwi Estate Pinot Noir2024

GOLD MEDAL and 95pts from International Wine and Spirits Competition

This wine is a bright, expressive and beautifully layered Pinot Noir, with aromas of wild herbs, dark cherry, blueberry and subtle spice. The palate is generous and silky, showing ripe blackberry and plum fruit supported by fine tannins and a long, smooth finish.

Approachable and effortlessly drinkable, this Pinot Noir is equally at home on its own or alongside food. Pair with salmon, duck, lamb, chicken or beef for an easy crowd favourite.

Vineyard

Our vineyard is situated on an elevated gravel terrace between two rivers, formed by the massive 1855 Wairarapa earthquake. In the rain shadow of the Tararua Ranges, this dry, free-draining site provides the ideal conditions for growing Pinot Noir, warm days balanced by cool nights that preserve freshness and flavour. Eight Pinot Noir clones are planted across the site, with sustainable vineyard practices and naturally low yields producing clean, intensely flavoured fruit. The 2024 vintage was exceptional, with a warm, dry growing season delivering outstanding colour, concentration and balance.

Winemaking

The fruit is harvested by clone and fermented separately in small open-top tanks using a combination of traditional techniques including plunging, pump-overs and gentle handling. This careful approach allows each parcel to express its individual character and complexity.

Following fermentation, the wine is matured in a combination of barrel and tank, where malolactic fermentation softens and rounds the palate before the final blend is assembled and prepared for bottling.
