We sat down with our winemaker, Miles Dinneen, to get his take on wine matches for Christmas Day.
Present opening
We don’t know many families who can wait until after breakfast, so this is the prefect opportunity to start the day in style, and bubbly makes a great accompaniment to a cooked breakfast or anything with summer fruits.
Recommends: ME by Matahiwi Rose or the classic Matahiwi Blanc de Blanc
Pigs in Blankets
We love plenty of treats on Christmas Day and one of our favourites, Pig in Blankets (sausages wrapped in bacon and baked), is thought to have come from a Betty Crocker cookbook for kids from 1957.
The bright herbal, tropical flavours and fresh acidity of the Sauvignon Blanc are a great foil for the rich salty flavours of the bacon and sausage, refreshing the palate for another one.
Recommends: Matahiwi Estate Sauvignon Blanc
Ham off the Bone
The apple and pear drop flavours, and subtle spicy fruit and gentle acidity or Pinot Gris compliment the sweet smoky flavours of ham.
Recommends: Holly Chardonnay or Matahiwi Estate Pinot Gris
Roast Lamb
Herb and berry fruit aromatics, plum and mushroom flavours, fresh acidity and silky tannins on the palate are an ideal match for rich but delicate lamb.
Recommends: Holly Holly South Series Pinot Noir
Pavlova
Strawberry and cream with a delicate texture describes both Pavlova and our Bubbly Rose
Recommends: Holly pink bubbles of course – Matahiwi Estate Brut Rose
